Mercedes Constance Hoeppner was born July 10, 1917 in Perry Township, near Traer, Iowa: the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Vochoska) Kostlan. She graduated from Traer High School and received her teaching degree from Iowa State Teachers College. Mercedes taught in several one room country schools until she was united in marriage to Elmer Hoeppner on January 15, 1946. He preceded her in death on January 15, 1984. Together they farmed for many years at Hudson. While they were farming, she worked at Craft Insurance in Hudson and was a substitute teacher with Waterloo Community Schools well into her 80's. Mercedes enjoyed birds, her animals and flowers.
Mercedes died on her farm on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the age of 96. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Elmer; 2 brothers: Marvin Kostlan and James Kostlan and a sister Winona Weber. Mercedes is survived by 2 daughters: Roxine (Mike) Hild of LaPorte City and Sherry (Mike Crawford) Hoeppner of Aurora, Colorado; 6 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and a sister Marilyn Peterson of Waterloo.
