For June, the Yard of The Month was awarded to Dwayne and Lana Luze. The Luzes moved into Dysart city limits about five years ago. Before this they were located 4-5 miles north of Dysart in the country. Lana really misses the country life, but being able to live on the edge of town, with a big beautiful yard that backs up to a field makes it seem almost like still living in the country.
Lana does most of the gardening, but Dwayne is always there when she needs someone to help with heavy lifting. They enjoy spending time together working on the yard and gardens. One of Lana's favorite parts of her yard is hearing the flag snap in the wind.
"Back on the farm we used to have a tall flagpole with a huge flag on it, I could hear the snapping and popping of the flag all the way from inside, and I loved the way it sounded," Lana said. "So being able to have a smaller one in town is wonderful."
Lana's favorite tree is the Shawnee Brave Cypress tree. This is a pyramidal shaped tree with soft yet full foliage. The tree is still young, but once it is full grown it will stand nearly 20-30 feet tall. She also loves to watch the birds in her bird bath which sits in the bed of bright pink roses.
They wanted to create a way to let natural light enter their basement, without having a typical walk out basement. The idea they came up with was to dig out a large enough area to let sun shine through the big windows. They landscaped this area beautifully with scrubs and rock. There is also stairs to get down into the area, so this could be used for many different things.
