The Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) will hold the annual District Large Group Speech Contest at Union High School on Saturday, January 19 from 8-4. The public is encouraged to stop out and support local students. UHS is hosting 29 teams from 25 schools. There are 235 registered entries in 11 categories this year.
Each year, the IHSSA holds District and State contests for Large Group and Individual events. Large Group contests are held prior to the Individual events. Iowa is divided into quadrants: Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest. The Northeast quadrant has four Large Group contest sites and UHS is one of those sites.
Forty-four Union students are participating in the Large Group contest this year. This is one of the larger teams that Union has had in the last five years. In 2012, two groups received All State nominations for Ensemble Acting and Musical Theatre.
"The students work very hard to create different pieces. It is amazing what high school students are capable of doing," said Large Group District Contest Manager Korina Carlson, who hopes the public will attend the event.
"Performances are always best done for a live audience and having multiple people there to see the students always makes the students very excited," said Carlson.
For some students, this is the only extra-curricular activity that they are involved in and this event gives the public an opportunity to see these students in the spotlight. Other students involved are normally seen in the athletic spotlight and this event gives the public the opportunity to see the athletes perform academically.
"It is an opportunity to see many incredible performances by many students throughout the day and a huge variety of areas and genres," said Carlson.
There is a suggested donation of $3 per person for admission. All of the monies go towards the Union High School Speech program to fund payment of royalties and materials needed for contest entries.
