The Union Knights' Girls Soccer Team competed in the Waverly Tournament on May 14. The girls started with a decisive win over South Tama. Junior midfielder Kelsey Ewald scored the first goal of the tournament only thirty seconds into the match off what was meant to be a cross. Sophomore forward, Kylie Powell added five goals to the Knights tally while junior forward, Casey Barney added two goals. Junior defender Kaley Grosse and junior mid, Tori Zempel rounded out the Knights' scoring with one goal apiece. Senior stopper Ashley Frush and junior forward Noel Mahood each had two assists while Ewald, sophomore, Aryn Isenhower, sophomore defender Emily Phillips and freshman mid Tessa Reiter each had one assist. The final for the match was Union 10 and South Tama 0.
The Knights' second match of the tournament was against 14th ranked Bondurant-Farrar. The game was scoreless at the half. Bondurant played a strong defensive game that forced the Knights to dig deep. Union outshot Bondurant 13-1 but only found the back of the net once, when Mahood set up Powell in front of the net for the game-winning goal. The final against Bondurant-Farrar was Union 1 Bondurant-Farrar 0.
The Knight's final game of the tournament was against 3rd ranked Waterloo Columbus. The Knights' first goal was off what was intended to be a cross from Mahood. The ball sailed over the keeper's head and into the upper corner of the net. The Knights scored again in the second half when Mahood connected with Powell. The Knights outshot the Sailors 8-6. Junior goalkeeper Whitney Blunt made five saves to record the shutout for the Knights. The final score in the game was Union 2 and Waterloo Columbus 0. This brings the girls' record to an amazing 12-0 for the season so far.
