School may be out, but the learning still continues through the summer reading program at Norma Ander Library. Recently, the library has welcomed some fun, intriguing programs into the Dysart community and this past week was no exception.

On Friday, June 22, the Iowa State University Insect Zoo brought along lots of interesting creatures to the Dysart Community Center. Included were beetles, tarantulas, stickbugs, and many more fascinating bugs. ISU students Noah Latham and Jillian Kurovski made it their mission to show that insects aren't actually scary, but in fact really cool. Attendees were allowed an up-close look at their new insect friends and even allowed to touch some. Kids were also read a book exploring the different sounds insects can make to attract mates or scare off predators.

On Monday, June 25, Haley Shope from ISU Extension stopped by the library to talk about the difference between sound and music. Several libraries in Tama County asked for a program about sound, which put Shope and her director came up with fun, creative ways to keep kids interested and involved with music. Kids were able to craft a harmonic, whistle pipe and maraca with everyday household items.

"We found some of the ideas on websites and Pinterest," Shope said. "The most important part of hands-on activities is the fact kids don't like sitting still. When you get them up and moving, it gets their brain going. Listening and interacting makes them think, and we enjoy that."

Shope hoped that kids would be inspired to create music at home and hear the different sounds. Simple instruments, such as the ones made in the library, were highly recommended by Shope. These instruments could anything simple at fill glasses with different levels of water, just as long the music is done at the appropriate time.
