The ceremony to dedicate the Bill Brandt Memorial Windmill was held Sunday afternoon, August 24th, at the Dysart Historical Center. Over thirty family members and friends gathered in the shade of tents, provided by the DDC, to enjoy the ceremony.
The group was welcomed by Historical Society President, Mark Monroe. Larry Lorenzen, chairman of the Historical Society's windmill committee, shared the problems of finding and transporting a quality windmill and the challenging task of installing it. Councilman Brett Hennessy spoke on behalf of the City of Dysart, expressing appreciation for the work done by the Historical Society in preserving the community's treasures and heritage. The formal Windmill Dedication was given by President Monroe, and the windmill was then turned on to the delight of everyone present. He also thanked all the people who had worked to obtain and install the windmill. John Brandt, Bill Brandt's son, spoke on behalf of the family. He reminisced and expressed their pleasure at the fitting memorial for Bill. He also thanked everyone who helped with the windmill project. Funds for the windmill were given by the Bill Brandt family and friends.
Following the ceremony, watermelon and cool drinks were served. Visitors also had an opportunity to watch a video in the country School showing the installation of the windmill. The video was prepared by Rita Cranston from photos taken by Helen Wieben during installation of the windmill.
