Richard "Dick" K. Thompson, 76, of Traer, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Allen Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be held at Overton Funeral Home on Thursday, July 31, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a service at Traer United Presbyterian Church on Friday, August 1 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Buckingham Cemetery.
Richard "Dick" Keith Thompson, Jr. was born on June 10, 1938, in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Richard, Sr. and Doris (Ball) Thompson. Dick graduated from New London High School with the class of 1956. On June 15, 1958, he was united in marriage to Shirley Kuhlenbeck at the Presbyterian Church in New London. Dick went into the lumber business and owned the Farmers Lumber Company in Traer and Clutier. He also farmed in Traer and retired in 2008. Dick was a member of the Traer United Presbyterian Church and enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren. Dick died at the age of 76 on Sunday, July 27, 2014, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister in law, Delores Hausner. Dick is survived by his wife, Shirley of Traer; two sons, Mike (Lisa) Thompson of Traer and Jeff (Shelly) Thompson of Des Moines; two daughters, Dawn (Dave) Tobin of Waverly and Ann (Dave Beaver) Thompson of Waterloo; twelve grandchildren; two brothers, Bill (Jane) Thompson of Ripley, Mississippi and Dan (Audrey) Thompson of Denver; a brother in law, Marv (Karen) Hausner of Central City; and many nieces and nephews.
