Letter to the Editor: National Ag Day

Dear Editor,

Where does our food come from? If you're like most Americans, the answer is the grocery store. This is very disturbing. The grocery store isn't where food comes from - it's just from where food is distributed. Just a few generations ago, most people were a part of, or had family or relatives involved with agriculture. People still need to be aware of agriculture in their lives, and what it takes to put food on the dinner table.

The Agricultural Council of America (ACA) has announced that March 25, 2014 will be the 41st anniversary of National Ag Day, to be celebrated in classrooms and communities across the country.

National Ag Day is a time when producers, agricultural associations, government agencies and countless others across American gather to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by American agriculture. As the world's population soars, there is an even greater demand for food, fiber, and renewable resources produced by farmers.

American farmers are continuing to work harder than ever, and it shows. Today, each farmer feeds more than 144 people. The need for food produced in the United States is increasing yearly. Agriculture is the nation's #1 export and is very important in sustaining a healthy economy.

National Ag Day is a good time to reflect and to be grateful for American agriculture.
