Emma Kjarvik Rolfes will celebrate her 100th birthday Dec. 6th. She was born in Howard County and grew up north of Lawler, IA. In 1941 she and Leo Rolfes were married at Riley Ridge, IA. She and Leo lived in the La Porte City, Dysart, Traer, and again, Dysart area from 1942 till 2002. From Dysart they moved to Atkins to be close to her daughter, Diane and family. Her husband, Leo, passed away four days later. She remained living there on her own till July of 2007. She has been a member of the Keystone Nursing Care Center "family" the past six years.
Emma enjoyed being a farm wife while raising her family and working with raising her chickens, growing her flowers and large gardens and canning, preserving, and freezing.
She was known for being an excellent cook and baker. She frosted Christmas cookies yet when she was 98 and she still does in her dreams. There was never any celebration, of which there were many, without a large meal!
Her children, Diane and Dave Herman and Dennis and Lana Rolfes are hosting a birthday party for her Dec. 7th at the care center. Attending will be her 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 4 step great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter and 1 brother-in-law and 1 sister-in-law. Many of her nieces and nephews are traveling also.
If you were ever her neighbor or friend you were a part of her extended family. Emma remembered everyone with cards. If you would like to send her one on this occasion please send it to: KNCC, Emma Rolfes, 250 5th St., Keystone, IA 52249.
