Yard of the Month for September was awarded to Wilma Loutsch. Wilma moved to Dysart in 1967 with her husband Bob. She has always lived in Iowa and was born and raised just South of Sioux City. Wilma enjoys spending time outside, and loves staying active. Her yard is rather large, as it sits on two different lots of land, but she enjoys the space and doesn't mind the extra time it takes to mow. She said as long as she is able, you will find her outside staying active.
Wilma has a small vegetable garden in the back of her property. This year she is growing tomatoes, peppers, beets, carrots, and potatoes. She loves to eat the fresh vegetables and will also have some left over to can and enjoy throughout the winter! She said the vegetable garden used to be much larger, when her late husband Bob was around to help. "He thoroughly enjoyed spending time outside and loved tending to all of the vegetables," Wilma stated. Now she grows enough to enjoy herself with out taking up quite as much time as a large vegetable garden.
Wilma also enjoys planting flowers all around the yard to brighten things up! One of her favorite flowers is the Hysbiscus. They are easy to care for and come back diligently every year. She also plants Geraniums, these however do not come back automatically. Every year at the end of summer she clips some leaves off of her geraniums and then plants them in new pots. She grows them into new plants in her basement throughout the entire winter. They don't take much care to do this, just watering them regularly and placing them under a regular 8 foot grow light that is on a timer will do the trick. This is a great way to save money, but ensure you will have beautiful flowers for next year!
