Barber enjoying role as new chief

August 23, 2013

The city of Dysart was on the hunt for a new police chief. Jim Barber of Mechanicsville also happened to be looking for a new job. Jim grew up in Missouri and started out his career in law enforcement down there. He was a private investigator for the state of Missouri for 8 years before he became a police officer. Jim has worked in law enforcement for 36 years total, and this is the fourth town he has been the chief of. He has worked in larger cities and smaller towns. Out of the two, he said he prefers the small-town feel. In the few weeks that he's been here, he has been pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome he has received from everyone.

Jim and his wife, Janette, currently reside in Mechanicsville, IA. They have 3 children. Ginger is their oldest and the only daughter; she lives in California and has 2 children of her own. Their second child is James, he resides in Tipton. Their youngest is Cory, who lives in Ames. Cory has a three year-old daughter, and another child on the way. Janette often makes trips to Ames to spend time with them. As Jim was looking for a new job, Janette mentioned that anything closer to Ames would be convenient. Jim started to look around and it was by chance that Dysart was looking for someone, and just happened to be about the halfway point to Ames. He applied for the position, and shortly after began the role as our police chief.

Jim is currently commuting back and forth, but they do have plans to move into town shortly. Jim stated that he thinks Dysart will be a great fit and it is a wonderful town with lovely charm and even better residents. They are both excited to move into town and become a part of the awesome community we have here in Dysart. Janette is also happy that they will be closer to Ames!
