Jeannine Smentek, 69, of Traer, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2013, at her home. There will be a public gathering at the home of her son, Scott Smentek, 404 1st St. in Traer on Thursday, July 18, 2013, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Jeannine Anne Smentek was born January 13, 1944 in Chicago, IL, daughter of John and Wanda (Zasonski) Myskow. She was raised in Chicago where she attended and graduated from Cardinal Stritch High School in 1961. She continued her education at Felician College in Chicago and Triton College in River Grove, IL. On October 12, 1963 she was united in marriage to Michael Smentek in Chicago. Jeannine was the Executive Director of the Portage Park Chamber of Commerce in Chicago from 1974 to 1999. In 1999 they moved to Traer, IA where she was employed by Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare in Traer, Gladbrook and Dysart until ill health caused her early retirement this year. Her death came at her home on Monday, July 15, 2013 at the age of 69 years. She was an active member and past President of the St. Constance Elementary School Board in Chicago and was involved in numerous urban development and planning committees in Chicago. When they moved to Traer she remained active and served on the Winding Stairs Festival Committee, Traer Theater fund raising committee and Theater Board and was on the boards of the Traer Historical Museum and the Salt and Pepper Shaker Gallery where she served as Secretary. She was preceded in death by her parents, twin children Mary and Joseph and her sister, Sister Christine Myskow. She is survived by her husband Michael of Traer, children, Scott Smentek and wife Terrie of Traer, Susan Smentek and her husband Keith Baumann of Elmhurst, IL, Sharon Scherrer and husband Keith of Traer, Julie Calcagno and husband Jim of Chicago, IL and Jennifer Jampoler and husband Jason of Traer, and 9 grandchildren, Laurel, Lena and Nolan Baumann, Emma and Adel Scherrer, Gianna and Gianluca Calcagno and Lukasz and Lilka Jampoler.
