The Union softball team got a late-season victory over Marion on the road last Thursday night, putting an end to a five-game losing streak.
The Knights (9-14) got RBIs from sophomore Kaylee Sherwood and junior Lauren Barz en route to a 4-1 victory over the host team in the first game of a doubleheader.
Raini Hilmer, Sam Barz and incoming freshman Peyton Parker all had two hits apiece, and Parker also pitched a solid game, going the full seven innings and allowing just one run. Parker struck out eight.
The second game was not so successful for Union, as the team suffered a 9-0 shutout at the hands of Maquoketa. Lauren and Sam Barz, along with Kailtin Holschlag, were the only Knights to record hits in the game.
The Barz sisters are the only Knights hitting above .300 this season, with Lauren batting .306 and Sam batting .405.
Parker has been the team's workhorse on the mound, going nearly 100 innings and compiling a 7-10 overall record, no small feat for a player not even in high school yet. Her 3.38 ERA and 88 strikeouts are a welcome sign for a team looking for stability going forward.
The ladies had back-to-back games against Dike-New Hartford and BCLUW to end the regular season on Monday and Tuesday. Results of those contests will be included in next week's edition.
