Knights Lose in Extra Innings
The Union Baseball Team lost a see saw battle with Hudson 8-7 on June 18. Hudson started the scoring by plating two runs in the first inning. Union responded with three in the bottom half to take an early 3-2 lead. Tecklenburg got things going by reaching on a walk followed by Driscol reaching on an error. A Will Crees single scored Tecklenburg and a double by Barz allowed Driscol and Crees to score. Union scored a single run in the second as Carey walked, stole second and scored on a misplayed ball hit by Tecklenburg.
Hudson scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at four. Each team scored a run in the fourth to once again tie the game. Carey got things going with a two out single and scored on a Tecklenburg single. Hudson pushed ahead by scoring two unearned runs in the fifth.
In the sixth, Union's Justin Carey reached on a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Barz. Union trailed 7-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh but mounted a game tying comeback. Bo Bader reached on a walk, was bunted to second by Peters, and eventually scored on a two out single by sophomore Austin Kiler. Kiler ended the inning at second as Union was unable to push him across. Hudson scored in the top of the eighth while the Knights were unable to produce a threat in the bottom half.
The following had hits lead by sophomore Alex Barz who continues to have a hot bat as of late: Carey (2), Tecklenburg (2), Driscol, Crees, Barz (3), Kiler (2).
Brady Driscol took the complete game loss on the mound giving up four earned runs, 12 hits, striking out four, and walking one.
Union Baseball Sweeps Independence
The Union Baseball swept Independence 6-0 and 14-4 on June 19.
In game one, Ted Tecklenburg threw a solid game earning the win giving up five hits, walking one and striking out three. The Knights scored two in the first as Tecklenburg reached on a fielder's choice and was later knocked in by a Barz single. Driscol reached on a walk and later scored on an error on a ball hit by Bader. Union scored one more in the second as Carey reached on a two out walk, stole second and scored on a single by Tecklenburg.
Union scored a single run in the fourth as senior Justin Clark started the inning with a double and scored on a double by senior Austin Howe. Two more runs in the sixth proved to be more than enough with the pitching of Tecklenburg. Howe got things going with a triple, Holschlag reached on a walk, and a double by sophomore Justin Carey scored both Howe and Holschlag.
The following had hits: Carey (2), Tecklenburg, Baz, Bader, Clark, Howe (2), and Holschlag.
In game two, Union scored early and often plating five runs in the first. Carey, Tecklenburg, and Driscol got things started with consecutive singles with Driscol's knocking in two runs. Bader reached on a walk and later scored on a triple by senior Nic Peters. After a walk to Clark, Howe's single scored Peters to round out the big inning.
Union scored two more in the second as Tecklenburg reached on a single and was followed by consecutive walks to Driscol, Barz, Bader, and Peters. Independece scored a lone run in third however Union scored two more of their own in the third. Holschlag and Carey lead things off with back to back hits. Holschlag scored on a ground out by Tecklenburg while Carey scored on a passed ball.
Two more runs in the fourth gave Union starter Bo Bader plenty of cushion. Nic Peters lead off with a single and scored on a triple by Clark. Clark scored on a ground out by Howe to put Union up 11-1 after four innings of play. Independence appeared to extend the game by scoring three in the fifth and were threatening to score more, but Union reliever Alex Barz struck out the side to end the threat. Union scored three in the bottom half to end the game by the 10 run rule. Driscol reached on a single, stole second and advance to third on a an error on Barz's grounder to second. A single by Bader knocked in Driscol while a Nic Peters' double scored freshman Bryon Sells who was running for Bader.
Bo Bader earned the win by striking out three, giving up four hits, three earned runs, and walking six.
Offensively, Union was lead by senior Nic Peters' three hits : Carey (2), Tecklenburg (2), Driscol (2), Bader, Peters (3), Clark, and Howe.
