In a June 14th doubleheader with Wapsie Valley, the Union Baseball Team split losing the first game 11-10 and winning the second 14-5.
In game one, Wapise got off to a quick start scoring four runs in the first and two more in the second. Fortunately, Union's bats remained hot from earlier in the week and scored three of their own in the first and one in the second to keep the game close. In the first, Tecklenburg reached on a fielder's choice followed by a Driscol single and Tecklenburg scored on an Alex Barz two out double. Driscol and Barz later scored on a clutch hit by Bo Bader to round out the scoring for the home team. Justin Carey scored the lone run in the second inning after reaching on a walk.
Trailing 6-4 in the third, the Knights closed the gap even further with a single run. Barz reached on a walk and scored on a two out single by Justin Clark. Wapsie kept up the scoring pace and tacked on two more in the fourth followed by a lone Union run in the bottom half. Tecklenburg was hit by a pitch, advanced on Driscol single, and later scored on another two out hit by Barz.
Union scored two more in the fifth to tie the game at eight. Senior Nic Peters lead things off with a walk and later scored on an error which allowed Carey to reach base. Tecklenburg followed up with a two out hit to push Carey's tying run across.
Things remained scoreless the next two innings and forced extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Wapsie scored three runs to take an 11-8 lead. Union responded in the bottom half as Driscol lead off with a single, advanced on a Will Crees' single and later scored on a wild pitch. A ground out by Bader scored Crees, but that is as close as the Knights would get losing 11-10. A couple of untimely errors and leaving five runners in scoring position proved to be the difference in the tight game.
The following had hits for Union: Tecklenburg, Driscol (3), Crees (2), Barz (2), Bader, and Clark. Barz lead the nights with two RBI's which proved to be just the start of a big night for the sophomore.
Nic Peters suffered the loss on the mound giving up twelve hits, striking out three, and allowing seven earned runs.
In a make-up game situation, Union was the visiting team for game two. The Knights took advantage of their first at bat and scored four in the first inning. Sophomore Justin Carey got things started with a hit, stolen second and advanced to third on a pasted ball. Tecklenburg and Driscol reached on walks and along with Carey scored later in the inning. Once again, a Barz single pushed a run across the plate. His runner, senior Austin Howe, also scored in the inning to give the Knights an early lead.
Wapsie continued to hit well and scored three in the first and two in the second off Union starter Brady Driscol. Union's bats continued to roll in the fifth as they took the lead 6-5. Crees produced a one out single followed by a Barz single and a Bader fielder's choice which plated one run. Austin Howe who was running for Barz later scored on a single by Clark to take the lead.
The following had hits for Union: Carey, Tecklenburg, Crees (3), Barz (4), Bader, Clark (2), and Kiler (2). Crees and Barz provided the clean up hitting for Union. In the double header, Crees was five for ten with four runs scored; Barz was six for eight with three doubles, five runs scored and six RBI's.
Driscol earned the win on the mound throwing seven innings, allowing eight hits, striking out six, no walks and three earned runs. Brady was very efficient on the night throwing just 64 pitches while retiring the last 13 batters in a row to finish the game.
Union is 4-9 overall and 3-3 in conference play winning three of their last four games.
