Union baseball opens up season with win
The Union Baseball Team opened up the 2012-13 season with a come from behind win over Montezuma at home on May 20. Junior Bo Bader started on the mound for the Knights and came out throwing strikes holding Montezuma to no runs over the first three innings. On the offensive side, sophomore Justin Carey got things started in the first inning by reaching on an error, advancing on a hit by Ted Tecklenburg, and later scored on an error. Brady Driscol's hit drove in Tecklenburg for a quick 2-0 start for the Knights. Union scored two more in the bottom of the third on back to back hits by Carey and Tecklenburg, a walk to Driscol, and a RBI fielder's choice on Alex Barz's grounder.
Montezuma got things going in the top fourth scoring seven runs on five hits to take a 7-4 lead. Union responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth. Austin Kiler, Carey, Driscol, and Bader all scored runs in the inning with Barz clearing the bases with a two out double to the gap during the inning.
Montezuma tied the game in the fifth and held Union scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. After Carey was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored the winning run on a squeeze play with Driscol. Relief pitchers Tecklenburg and Barz held Montezuma scoreless to perserve the win and earned Barz his first varsity win.
Players collecting hits in the game were Carey, Tecklenburg (2), Driscol, Barz, Holschlag, and Clark.
In game two, Union was leading 3-0 after three and a half innings when the game was called due to lightening.
The Union Baseball Team traveled to Ackley and left with a 5-4 loss. Four errors and leaving 13 baserunners was too much for the Knights to overcome. Union jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first with Carey leading things off on a walk and stolen base. Tecklenburg followed with a hit which allowed Carey to score on aground out by Driscol. Union tacked on another run in the second on a double by Carey and a RBI single by Driscol.
AGWSR scored one in the second on two hits off starter Driscol and three more in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Union tied it up in the top of the sixth. Carey lead things off drawing a walk, stole second and third, and scored on a sac fly by Crees. AGWSR took the lead in the sixth and stuck out the side in the top of the seventh to earn the win.
Carey, Tecklenburg, Driscol, Barz, and Kiler all collected hits while Driscol suffered the loss on the mound.
Oelwein sweeps Union
The Oelwein Huskies swept the Union Knights on their home field on May 24. In game one, Oelwein went up 4-0 after four innings collecting seven hits off Union starter Alex Barz. Bo Bader threw shutout ball for the last three and two thirds innings. Offensively, Union was kept in check by Oelwein's starter who struck out nine.
Only four Union players were able to collect hits: Carey, Driscol (2), Crees, and Bader. Barz suffered the loss on the mound.
In game two, each team found runs tough to come by as Oelwein pulled out a 2-1 win. The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Oelwein plated two runs on three hits off of Union starter Nic Peters. Union repsonded with a lone run in the bottom half on a single by Crees and a RBI double by Barz.
The Oelwein pitchers and Union's Nic Peters went pitch for pitch the rest of the way with Union making a threat in the seventh. Tecklenburg, Driscol, and Crees were able to reach base safely to load the bases with two outs, but Union was unable to capitialize and push the tying and/or winning runs across.
Clark and Crees had hits in the game while Barz and Driscol collected two hits a piece. Peters threw a solid game giving up two runs, four hits, and struck out seven in a complete game outing.
