Ken Gregory and Steve Hix are always good for an epic fish story and the fishing buddies have reeled in another big one. Ken, Steve, and Hanna Hix (Steve's daughter) went ice fishing on Lake Iowa about eight times over the winter. The trio caught about 200 crappies, all of them between 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 inches.
On March 2nd, Ken hooked what he knew had to be a large fish. He played it to the ice hole and Steve reached down into the ice cold water and pulled the fish out by the lips. And this fish was massive, at 19 1/4 inches long, it weighed 3.5 lbs. To put this into perspective, an average crappie generally weighs 1/4 to 1/2 lb. Needless to say, Ken and Steve enjoyed a delicious fish dinner. This monstrous fish qualifies for an Iowa Master Angler award.
