Byron L. Kern, 79, of Hudson, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home. A service was held at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. with visitation beginning one hour prior.
Byron Lowell Kern was born on April 21, 1933, in Shelby, Iowa, the son of Lowell and Alice (Porter) Kern. He graduated from Dinsdale High School and enlisted in the US Navy. Byron served his country for five years in the Navy and for many more years in the Reserves. On July 27, 1964, he was united in marriage to Shirley Antle in Preston, Minnesota. The couple made their home in rural Hudson. Byron worked for Wilbert Meinhart Farms for 30 years, retiring in 1996. Byron and Shirley then moved to Hudson where he was the manager of Country Plaza Apartments. Byron was a very hard worker and took pride in everything he did. His greatest joys were his kids and grandkids. Byron is survived by his wife, Shirley; three sons, Jeffrey (Megan) Kern of Des Moines, William Byron (Raetta) Kern of Des Moines and Mike (Michelle) Weidner of Waterloo; a daughter, Denise (William) Clapp of Waterloo; a brother, Roy (Ellen) Kern of Traer; a sister, Marjorie (Emil) Cufr of Traer; nine grandchildren, Kahla, Jessica, Andy, Lucas, Stephanie, Tori, Jessyca, Aaron, and Bob; and seven great grandchildren, Maddox, Kensington, Jacob, Andrew, Autumn, Emma, and Leland. Byron was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Johnathan; two brothers, Wentzel and Marvin Kern; and a sister, Ruth Wood.
