On February 1st, Chloe Heitmann was in a severe car accident. Eleven year-old Chloe was airlifted to Covenant Medical Center, where she was found in critical condition. Soon after, she was transferred to the University of Iowa's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Iowa City. Both of Chloe's lungs had collapsed; she sustained a tracheal tear and suffered lacerations to her liver and spleen. She also had a broken hip, pelvis, and ribs.
Chloe has shown remarkable spirit as she has beaten the odds and has recovered even faster than the doctors anticipated. Chloe is a sixth grader at Union Middle School, and just over a month after this tragic accident, she is happily attending half days at school a few days per week, despite the fact that she must wear a neck brace and walk with a walker during rehabilitation. Chloe has shown impressive determination throughout it all.
Her friends describe her as the life of the party and she always knows how to make people smile. Chloe loves spending time with her family and friends, adores animals and loves playing basketball, soccer, volleyball, and participating in dance.
Chloe is the daughter of Dawn and Matt Heitmann, and also popularly known as Deb Elliot's granddaughter. To help support Chloe and the Heitmann family during this trying time, the Dysart Lions Club will be holding a tenderloin dinner fundraiser at the Dysart Community Building on April 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will also be a silent auction. The event is being arranged by Abbie Hoppe, Jenna Scott, and Sheila Driscol.
Bracelets and t-shirts are being sold featuring "You got this Chloe," the encouraging words from her friends. These can be purchased from Abbie Hoppe, owner of All About U, by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, or at the benefit fundraiser. Donations may also be made to the Chloe Heitmann Benefit at Security State Bank in Dysart.
