The Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union recognizes those teams and cheerleading squads that have collectively excelled in the classroom during their sports' season with Academic Achievement Awards. There are two awards that can be earned: the Excellence in Academic Achievement Award is given to teams that have achieved a combined grade point average of 3.20-3.60 during the second trimester or third nine weeks; and the Distinguished in Academic Achievement Award is given to teams that have achieved a combined grade point average of 3.61-4.00 during the second trimester or third nine weeks. The "team" is made up of all students, 9th through 12th grades, that are members of the team as well as any managers.

The Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union is proud to award the Excellence in Academic Achievement Award to the Union High School Girls' Basketball team for their combined grade point average of 3.29. The 2012-13 Girls Basketball team includes the following members: Hailee Acuff, Breann Bader, Samantha Barz, Katelyn Behrens, Peyton Bockholt, Natalie Hanson, Kaitlyn Helgeson, Jadin Hennings, Payton Hilton, Sammi Krug, Lauren Krupa, Emily Phillps, Morgan Phillips, Kylie Powell, Tessa Reiter, Amber Rottinghaus, Natalie Sallee, Haley Sanford, Kaylee Sherwood, Kimberly Sides, Brooke Thiele, Amanda Trimble, and Maria Wrage.

Any team that achieves these honors will be supplied with a "label" that will be displayed on their school's appropriate awards plaque. In addition, each girl on the team will receive a certificate for their personal accomplishment.
