Jean Virginia Cross, 93, of Toledo, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013 at Carrington Place of Toledo under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Christ United Methodist Church Worship Center in Toledo with Pastor Brian Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Buckingham Cemetery in Traer. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2013 from 12:30 PM until 2 PM at the church.
Jean was born on February 25, 1920, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of Glen and Selma Julia (Eige) Riddlesbarger. She graduated from Dysart High School and also attended business school.
On October 11, 1941, she was united in marriage to John G. "Jack" Safley in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He passed away in 1960. She then married Lyle E. Cross on August 10, 1961. He passed away in 1978. Prior to her marriage, she worked for the telephone company in Belle Plaine. Jean was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Farm Bureau, and Sweet Adelines. Jean loved to bowl, play Bingo, and enjoyed the companionship of her dogs.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a stepmother, Hallie Riddlesbarger; her husbands, John G. Safley and Lyle E. Cross; one sister, Marjorie (Harlan) Fehr; one step-daughter, Linda Pokorny; one step-son, Dwight Cross; and one great-grandson, Orien Mitchell Hulin.
Survivors include one son, John W. "Bill" Safley (Virginia Hlas) of Tama; one stepson, Daryl (Linda) Cross of Whitten; a step daughter-in-law, Ardene Cross and step son- in- law John Pokorny both of Clutier; twelve grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild on the way.
