The Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) District Large Group Speech Contest was held at Union High School on January 19. Hundreds of students, staff and supporters from 25 schools filled UHS during the event which lasted from 8-4.
The UHS team earned nine Division I ratings out of 11 performances. Six of the pieces were original pieces written by members of the group.
"Not only were their performances fantastic, they have incredible writing skills, as well. Also, due to the sheer volume of pieces, many of the students had to set up their own practices, practice on their own, and have the drive and dedication to succeed with only minimal coaching from myself. I can't tell you the last time I was around so many talented and gifted students, and we just keep doing better and better every year," said Dean Bostian, UHS Speech Coach.

Results of the district contest are listed on page 6 of this week's Dysart Reporter print issue.
The team will be heading to the State Large Group Contest at Dubuque Senior High School on February 2. Preparations are being made for the District Individual Speech Contest, which will be held on February 23 at Aplington-Parkersburg.
Bostian has total confidence in his team. "As the song goes, 'The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades'," said Bostian. Congratulations and good luck to the UHS Speech Team!
