The 8th grade Union Knight girls basketball team traveled to Denver to face the Cyclones on Thursday, and came away with a big victory, 37-8. All the Knights saw action in the win, but Courtney Powell and Jackie Barz combined for 26 points to lead the charge. Powell had 15 points, 6 steals and 5 rebounds while Barz had 11 points and 9 big rebounds. Maggie Driscol added 4 points with 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Peyton Parker added 3 points and 2 rebounds. Krystal Putz added 2 points with 3 rebounds and a steal. Maddie Winter had 1 point with 5 rebounds while Sophie Hayungs also added 1 point. Ashley Carey had 3 steals and 2 rebounds. Chole Grosse, Anna Garwood, Bobbi Hilmer and Payton Sash were held scoreless, but played well off the bench. The girls forced a lot of turnovers through their intense pressure which resulted in several offensive buckets. It seems the Knights are up against zone defenses more often than not, and have become comfortable exploiting them. Their passing, shooting, and patience against the zone have greatly improved this year.

The 8th grade Union Knight girls basketball team traveled to Jesup on Thursday to complete their season, and completed an undefeated season with a 39-15 win. The Knights also complete a combined 7th-8th undefeated career, a feat that has only been achieved one other time during my coaching career. The Knights were led by Courtney Powell's 14 points, 7 steals, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds. Jackie Barz added 6 points with 7 rebounds, 3 steals, and 5 assists. Chloe Grosse added 5 points, while Maddie Winter chipped in 4 points, and Krystal Putz had 3 points. Maggie Driscol, Peyton Parker, and Ashley Carey each had 2 points with Carey adding 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Parker had 4 rebounds. Anna Garwood, Payton Sash, Brianna Harvey, Bobbi Hilmer, and Sophia Hayungs came off the bench to help the Knights in the win. The Knights played hard on defense and ran an aggressive offense while playing very well as a team. The penetrate, dish, or pass and hit the open girl style of ball the girls play was very enjoyable to watch and coach. I would like to thank the girls and especially the parents for their support this season, to make it a most memorable and enjoyable basketball season. Good luck to the girls in their high school basketball careers.
