8th grade girls basketball gets better as year goes on

January 25, 2013
Dysart Reporter

The 8th grade Union Knight girls basketball teams traveled to Aplington on Monday to face a very tough Aplington-Parkersburg team. The Knights were ready for the challenge, fresh off their Christmas Break, and came out primed and rearing to go. The Knights hustled from the opening tip and played their usual "in your face" defense. The Knights were led by Maggie Driscol and Jackie Barz with 8 points each and 6 and 5 steals and 3 and 4 rebounds respectively. Both played very intently. Courtney Powell was her usual "thorn" in the opposing point's side as she added 4 points and 12 big steals. She also played a great defensive game. Peyton Parker and Chloe Grosse rounded out the scoring as both added 2 points, but also had 6 and 3 boards respectfully and Chloe added 2 steals. Ashley Carey and Krystal Putz did a nice job in spite of being held scoreless. Ashley had 2 big rebounds. I can't say enough about how well the team played as a "team" and how intense they were for the whole game. It was everything a coach likes to see in a solid team. The final was Union 24-AP 19.

In the second game, Bobbie Hilmer led the Knights with 4 points 1 rebound and 1 steal and Krystal Putz added 2points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals as the Knights couldn't handle the quickness of the Falcons and dropped a tough one 12-6. Anna Garwood did a nice job at point and added 3 rebounds, while Payton Sash added 1 rebound. Sophie Hayungs did a nice job on defense also. Chloe Grosse and Ashley Carey helped out in the game also, coming off the bench to give the starters a break.

The team traveled to Denver to face the Cyclones last Thursday, and came away with a big victory, 37-8. All the Knights saw action in the win, but Courtney Powell and Jackie Barz combined for 26 points to lead the charge. Powell had 15 points, 6 steals and 5 rebounds while Barz had 11 points and 9 big rebounds. Maggie Driscol added 4 points with 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Peyton Parker added 3 points and 2 rebounds. Krystal Putz added 2 points with 3 rebounds and a steal. Maddie Winter had 1 point with 5 rebounds while Sophie Hayungs also added 1 point. Ashley Carey had 3 steals and 2 rebounds. The girls forced a lot of turnovers through their intense pressure which resulted in several offensive buckets.

Their passing, shooting, and patience against the zone have greatly improved this year.
