The Iowa High School Music Association (IHSMA) 1A/3A 2013 Jazz Band Festival was hosted at Union High School on January 12. A total of eleven jazz bands performed throughout the day, including Union Jazz Band I and Union Jazz Band II, directed by Michael Bistline. Other competitors included jazz bands from Dunkerton, Turkey Valley, Hampton-Dumont, Waverly-Shell Rock, Decorah, Webster City and West Delaware.

Each jazz band performed three selections before a panel of judges. Union Jazz Band II received a Division II rating from all of the judges and Union Jazz Band I received Division I from all of the judges.

"I felt the contest was a complete success! Both bands played very well and their scores were a reflection of their hard work. The kids have worked very hard this winter and I'm very pleased at the progress they have been making," said Bistline.
