Like the girls, the Union boys basketball team was the beneficiary of two important wins heading into the holiday break. The boys won a hard-fought 54-52 contest at Hudson on December 14, outlasting a Pirates squard that scored 30 points in the final quarter.
Jay Scheel and Brian Dunkelberger each had 10 points, and sophomore Brady Driscol had a team-high 11 in the win.
Following a 31-67 loss to an overpowering Dubuque team on December 16, the boys wrapped up the first half of their season with a 60-54 win over Jesup.
Bo Bader led the team with 16 points in a breakout performance, and also tied for a team high with seven rebounds. Jay Scheel scored 16, and Mitch Dierks also had 11 points to go along with a team-high three steals and three assists.
The boys take on Vinton-Shellsburg at home on Thursday, January 3 at 7:45 p.m. in La Porte City with a game against Denver the following night.
