Sam Barz is among the four Union volleyball players being recognized for her outstanding achievements on the court this year. Barz was named a Class 3A First Team All-State performer, joining the ranks of the state's most elite volleyball players.
Barz, a senior, was an integral part of the girls' run all the way to this year's state championship match, as well as the state tournament the past two seasons.
Barz had 381 kills on the season, leading the team. She also had a whopping 878 attack attempts, and was solid in the serving game with an .838 serving percentage. She led the team with 64 aces in 2012.
Payton Hilton, also a senior, was another one of the Knights' leading attackers and received Second Team (area only) recognition. Hilton finished the year with 328 kills and 612 attack attempts. Her 38 aces and .910 serving percentage were also among the team's best.
Lauren Barz was also honored as a Second Team performer in just her second season with the Knights. As a sophomore, Barz had 27 kills and was spectacular in the serving game, recording 33 aces and a .950 serving percentage.
Breann Bader, a junior, was second on the team with 57 aces and got Third Team (area only) honors. She also had 22 kills.
