Union Middle School held a special Veterans' Day Assembly on November 12 for students, staff and area veterans. The Dysart American Legion was on hand for the Presentation of the Colors.

A number of students participated in the program to honor veterans. The eighth grade band students, directed by Mrs. Routt, played "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful."

Each branch of the military was honored and the veterans in the audience were recognized. Students read "Six Boys and Thirteen Hands," a touching tribute to the soldiers in Iwo Jima.

The students showed great respect and reverence as they thanked the veterans. Principal Mark Albertsen encouraged the students to make a point to say thank you to any veterans they see in public. The assembly was a great lesson for all students in showing respect to those who have given so much in service to the United States of America.

The assembly was followed by a reception in the cafeteria for veterans and their student escorts and/or families.
