The Union Knights volleyball team earned their third straight trip to the state tournament in Cedar Rapids with a decisive performance in regionals last week.
The girls, who have fought their way to an outstanding 33-7 record, defeated Osage in the Class 3A regional final by scores of 25-21, 25,18 and 25-17 in Clarksville.
Sam Barz, who has been strong offensively all season for the Knights, led the team with 13 kills and three aces in the match. Barz also had four blocks. Brenna Allen also had 7 kills, and Lauren Barz had 27 assists.
In addition to their victory over Osage, Union also ran through two highly-ranked and well-respected opponents during the regional tournament. Dyersville-Beckman and Columbus Catholic were ranked 12 and 13, respectively, in the state in Class 3A, but neither could overcome the Knights' potent offensive attack.
The Knights have a tough road ahead of them if they hope to win a state title. Their bracket will see them start out against Sioux Center (31-6) in the opening game on Thursday, November 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
Should the Knights win, they will likely face undefeated and top-ranked Mediapolis (42-0). That contest would take place Friday at 3:30 p.m., with the championship match set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Dysart Reporter will have coverage of the girls as they continue their road towards a state title.
