October 4, 2012

Union students had the opportunity to experience "The Fiery Trial: Iowa and the Civil War", which is a traveling exhibit as part of the History on the Move program with the State Historical Society of Iowa. The 32-foot trailer, a mobile exhibit, was parked outside of the FFA Historical and Ag Museum in La Porte City September 23-25.

The exhibit includes a visual timeline of Iowa's participation in the Civil War, information about the Civil War in regard to the experience of Iowans, the impact of the Civil War on Iowa, and Iowa's role in the Civil Rights movement. The exhibit also includes information on Annie Wittenmyer, a Sanitation Agent for Iowa, and also features a computer program that allows visitors to research Civil War ancestors.

The students were able to tour the museum, the old fire station and jail house, and the 1880s cabin.
