Hard work creates September Yard of the Month

The Yard of the Month for September has been awarded to Don and Carol Zeien, at 808 Connell, by the Dysart Development Corporation.

The Zeien family moved to Dysart from Maryland about eight years ago because they wanted a safe place for their children to grow up. They fell in love with the house at 808 Connell and were thrilled with the local school system. Since then, they have striven to make changes to their yard each year. Last year they were unable to get anything done with the yard because of the damage from the wind storm.

Their corner lot is surrounded by a white picket fence which adds a distinct look to the home. This year, they built a strombella with a hammock that graces the front yard and also added a fountain near the front entrance of their yard.

"I would have to say that my fountain in the front yard is my favorite feature because I love the sound. I love what it does to the entry way of the house. It suits the house. It's a really strong focal point. A house like that deserves something to stand up and clap about," Carol said.

Carol credits her hard-working husband as being a huge part of why their yard is so well maintained, but the couple works together. She was quite shocked that they won the award.

"I don't even think my yard is worthy of getting the yard of the month. I don't have a clue of what I'm doing. I just throw stuff out there and hope that it grows and if it doesn't grow and it dies, I replace it the following year," Carol said with a laugh.

Since moving from Maryland, Carol has had to learn about planting in a different climate through trial and error. "I don't have a clue how to grow in zone five because I'm used to being on the east coast. I am trying to learn how to plant in zone five. I've had a lot of things not work and of course I'm learning what works here," Carol said.

Whatever the Zeien family is doing, they're definitely doing something right. Their yard adds beauty to the Dysart landscape and looks like something that could be featured in a home and garden magazine. Be sure to stop by and congratulate Don and Carol on earning the September Yard of the Month.
