Due to popular demand, the Norma Anders library in Dysart has added an electronic database to the collection, which is part of NEIBORS (powered by Overdrive), which stands for the North Eastern Iowa Bridge to Online Resource Sharing. The Norma Anders Library joins more than 150 libraries in northern and eastern Iowa that participate in NEIBORS. The collection features eBooks and audio books that can be easily downloaded to eReaders, such as the Kindle and Nook, smart phones, tablets, and to computers featuring Windows or Mac operating systems.

Previously, a survey was conducted in Dysart that found of those who responded, 60% were in favor of adding an electronic database while 40% were against it. Differences in opinion tended to be along generational lines. But as for Deb Reed, the library director, she welcomes this addition.

"I lost a lot of patrons because they were getting Nooks and Kindles and they stopped coming in to the library to check out books. The library will actually get credit for everything you check out through the NEIBORS website," Reed said.

Anyone who has a library card can check out an eBook or audio book online. Anyone who lives in Dysart, works or attends school in Dysart, or has a Dysart mailing address is eligible to receive a library card. The patron number on the library card is what is needed to log into the database.

"I think this will be a very valuable addition to the services that we already offer at the library. We are hoping that offering this service will also get people to become library users that haven't done so in the past," Reed said.

Checking out an eBook or audio book is similar to checking out a book at the library. Users will be able to utilize the download for a 14 day period. After the 14 days are up, the user will no longer be able to access the download and it cannot be renewed or checked out again by the same user. If the title is popular, users may have to reserve the title and wait until it is available. Three titles can be put on hold at one time. Numerous titles are added each month.

If interested in downloading from the database, users can visit and click on the NEIBORS icon located below the photo of the library. From there, the user can sign in using the patron number from the library card. It is also possible to download an Overdrive app from iTunes or the Google Play Store on your tablet or smart phone.

Device specific instructions are available at the NEIBORS site or users can visit the Norma Anders Library to receive a copy of the information. If you have any questions please call the library at 319-476-5210
