Bruce Boosters 4-H sends several to state fair

The Bruce Boosters 4-H Club enjoyed another successful year at the 2011 Benton County Fair and Iowa State Fair. Twenty members of the club exhibited projects at the county fair in livestock; home economics; science and engineering; clothing events; educational presentations; and the "Share the Fun" talent show.

Advancing to the 2012 Iowa State Fair were Mitchell Hanson with a milk can stool;

Jenna Lane with a refinished rocking chair; Kristen Lowe with a quilt and a photograph; and Nicole Lowe with a dress and a photograph.

Two teams of club members were selected to present working exhibits at the Iowa State Fair Jenna Lane and Madison Rippel with Cheeseburger Cookies; and Wesley Hanson and Jacob Lowe with Newspaper Hats. Kristen Lowe also was selected to compete in the State Fair $15 Challenge clothing competition and present an educational presentation called "Are You Informed?"

In the livestock competition, Ryan Miller won champion rate of gain in the beef show, and Eric Miller won reserve champion beef rate of gain. Jacob Lowe was champion junior poultry showman, and Olivia Sash won reserve champion breeding doe in the meat goat show. Wesley Hanson won champion bucket-bottle calf. Mitchell Hanson was champion senior dairy showman, and Natalie Hanson was champion overall dairy showmanship. Payton and Olivia Sash won top honors for goat herdsmanship.

Natalie Hanson also was named 2012 Benton County Fair Princess.

Other Bruce Boosters exhibiting at the Benton County Fair were Bobbie Hilmer, Daniel Johanningmeier, Sammi Krug, John McQuilkin, Nick McQuilkin, Stallone Purdy, Valerie Ryan and Clayton Sparks.

Outstanding recognition for Bruce Boosters members at the 2012 Iowa State Fair included Mitchell Hanson reserve champion intermediate dairy showman and champion intermediate Brown Swiss showman; Kristen Lowe top 10% in $15 Challenge clothing event; and Nicole Lowe medal of honor from the Professional Photographers of Iowa for a photograph.
