The Union Knights volleyball squad has been lighting it up so far this season, winning their first seven matches before dropping two at a tournament on Saturday.
The ladies opened the season with back-to-back 2-0 wins over North Tama and Belle Plaine before knocking out South Tama 3-1 last Thursday.
At Saturday's Vinton tournament, the girls recorded four 2-0 shutouts of Jesup, Alburnett, Janesville and host Vinton-Shellsburg.
They then dropped two hard-fought contests: 0-2 against Dike-New Hartford and 1-2 against West Delaware, Manchester.
Sam Barz has been the most aggressive offensive force for the Knights this season, recording at least 12 attack attempts in every contest and topping the 20-attack mark three times.
She has been part of a formidable duo with her sister, Lauren, who has had at least 30 assists in three matches this year.
Jena Boisen has done much of the serving so far this season, and has been efficient.
As a group, the girls have recorded 250 kills in their nine matches, with an average of 11.9 kills per set, the highest in the conference. They have also recorded 64 aces in the serving game, the second most in NICL action.
The girls were back in action on Tuesday, September 4 against Jesup, with a road contest on Thursday, September 6 ending too late to be included in this edition.
The Knights have several road contests over the next week and don't return home for a match until September 18, when they take on Wapsie Valley at 6 p.m.
