The June Yard of the Month has been awarded to Herb and Julie Smith, at 610 West Street, by the Dysart Development Corporation.
Julie began collecting hostas eight years ago and has collected over 120 varieties. "people don't realize how many kinds there are and that they come in different sizes, from just a few inches to 5' wide. Most people think there are just three or four varieties but there are well over 700," said Julie. She recommends that anyone who is interested in collecting or learning more about hostas visit www.hostalibrary.org.
The Smith's yard looks well groomed and cared for despite having to battle with wind, low moisture, rabbits, and even a raccoon, named Daisy, that has babies in their tree every year.
A highlight of the yard is a covered deck and patio in the backyard. They have a string of lights around the area to give it a nice ambience in the evenings. There is also a water feature near the patio. The yard also features one green and two red Japanese maple trees.
Herb assists Julie in planting. "wouldn't be what it is without him. He knows I enjoy it so he does it for me," said Julie. Julie does most of the grooming of the yard and enjoys mowing. "love to mow. I'm sure the neighbors look out and say 'Julie's mowing again!' every time they see me. It relaxes me," said Julie.
The yard looks well manicured and cared for, thanks to the Smiths. "beautiful yard is a constant work in progress. It's a labor of love. Stay at it and it will show," Julie advised. Be sure to stop by and congratulate the Smith family on being awarded with the Yard of the Month.
