The Union Lady Knights girls softball team opened their season last week, hoping to usher in the new year with a win. The visiting North Tama Lady Redhawks would have none of it, beating Union by a score of 4-2.
Pitcher Leah Jungling had a tough go of it, allowing three runs in just four innings of work. She did manage to strike out three, without walking a single batter. Jungling allowed eight total hits.
She was replaced after the fourth inning by junior Sam Barz, who managed to strike out four and allowed just two hits and one run in her three innings of work.
On the offensive side, the Knights had a tough time getting anything going, with no player notching more than one hit in the contest.
Raini Hilmer, Sara Jesse, Lauren Barz, Sam Barz, Leah Jungling and Jessica Bohnstengel each had one hit apiece. Sam Barz recorded the only RBI of the game, and the only extra base hit came on a double from Jesse.
The girls traveled to Gladbrook-Reinbeck for their first road game of the season on Thursday, and were back at it with a home game against Grundy Center on Friday (pictured at left).
