Gladys Joyce Stoakes died April 26, 2012 at her winter home in Ft. Myers, Florida. Visitation will be held at Overton Funeral Home in Dysart on Friday, May 25, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. with a service at Genesco United Methodist Church in rural Buckingham on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Mooreville-Hill Family Cemetery in rural Dysart.
Born in Dysart, Iowa in 1923, Gladys was the youngest child of Charles and Bertha Hill. She was predeceased by her sister Isabelle and her brother Forrest .
After graduating from Geneseo Consolidated High School she attended The University of Northern Iowa. She married Dr. Dean W. Stoakes in 1941, and is survived by her husband of 70 years and two daughters Karen (Bill) Shields and Pamela (Dr. Thomas) Kruse.
Dean and Gladys were residents of Dunkerton and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and then Glen Ellyn, Illinois. After retirement, they resided in Florida and their summer home in Salem, Oregon.
Gladys spent many years supporting the educational career of her husband and as a volunteer and board member of numerous charitable organizations. Gladys was an avid golfer who loved to travel, entertain and spend time with friends - but primarily she was a dedicated wife and mother who cherished her time with her family and extended family, which included her niece. Other extended family includes nieces and nephews, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
