Charles V. VanHorn Sr. of Traer, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at the age of 83, in the presence of his family at home. He was born April 25, 1928 in rural Cantrell, Iowa, the son of Oliver Leith and LaRue Lunsford VanHorn. He graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1946.
He served in the U.S. Army during Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. Charles was united in marriage to Carole Hilton October 22nd, 1962. He was employed by John Deere, Waterloo, Iowa, retiring in 1985.
He is survived by his wife, Carole of Traer; one son, Charles VanHorn Jr. (Michelle) of Sun City West, AZ; two daughters, Cindy Mason (Scott) of Traer, Iowa and Caren Wiedenhoff (Michael) of Garrison, Iowa; eight grandchildren; one expected great grandchild; three brothers, Victor (Anita) VanHorn of Des Moines, Lowell (Donna) VanHorn of Decorah, Larry (Shelva) VanHorn of Guthrie Center and a sister-in-law, Joyce VanHorn of Walnut, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Wayne; a sister Betty and brother-in-law Ron Abel.
Memorial Mass was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Porte City. Family received friends from 10 until service time on Saturday at the church. A private family graveside inurnment will be held in the West View Cemetery.
