High fructose corn syrup... the good

April 19, 2012
Dysart Reporter

As a corn farmer, I get upset when I'm at the grocery store and see foods marketed as being free from high fructose corn syrup, implying that HFCS is unnatural or unhealthy. I've seen this with all sorts of products - even chocolate milk like TruMoo. The fact is, as the American Dietetic Association has noted, "High fructose corn syrup is nutritionally equivalent to sucrose. Both sweeteners contain the same number of calories and consist of about equal parts of fructose and glucose. Once absorbed into the blood stream, the two sweeteners are indistinguishable." Please, food companies, reconsider your marketing campaigns. It's an easy fix that can only help you with your sales and your reputation with shoppers like me. -Al Schafbuch
