The Union High school football team set two new records during the Friday night game versus Independence according to Union stat keeper, Gregg McLaughlin.
The first record which was set in 1998 by the Union Knight Team was a record for rushing yardage with 399 yards. On Friday the Knights totaled 415 yards to break that record. The second record which was set was for total offensive yardage. Union had 549 yards in total offense with 134 yards in the air and 415 yards on the ground. The old record was in 1996 against Jesup with a total of 521 yards.
Players of the Week for performances during the Independence game was Chase Hansen, Tanner Heckt, Hunter Zempel and Wes Burnside for Offensive, Josh Clark and Jon Porter for Defensive, Brady Petersen for Special Teams, Jon Porter for Offensive Scout and Tedd Schmitz for Defensive Scout.
Union Player, Wes Burnside, after two games has rushed 445 yards in 45 carries and 5 touchdowns. He leads Class 3A in rushing at the current time based on the IAHSAA website. You can visit the website at www.iahsaa.org.
