Dorothy A. Vanicek, 99, of Traer passed away early Saturday morning on March 12 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo following a short illness. After a private internment at Buckingham Cemetery, a celebration of life was held at the United Methodist Church in Traer on March 16. A memorial fund has been established.
Dorothy was born in Traer on February 25, 1912 to Frank and Anna Slatinka. She graduated from Traer High School in 1930 and married Charles Vanicek on July 3, 1930. After her children were raised she took the position of Secretary for Don Lenth, Superintendent of the Traer Public School where she remained for 27 years, retiring in 1982. In this position she established many long-term friendships with faculty and students alike. After her retirement she served on the Buckingham Cemetery Board, the Taylor Park Board and as a volunteer at Sunrise Care Center. She was a longtime member of the Traer United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Eastern Star. She enjoyed travel, working in her yard and flower gardens, collecting antiques and visiting with her family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four siblings and her husband. She is survived by her three daughters and one son; Charlotte (Dennis) Murphy of Wheaton Ill., Dorothy (Howard) McLean of Dubuque and Romona (Jim) Snow of Traer, her son; David (Barbara) Vanicek of Paradise Calif., nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
