Marth Maxine Kubik, 91

Martha Maxine Kubik, 91, of Cedar Rapids formerly of Traer, died December 18, 2010 at Mercy Hospice, Hiawatha. A visitation was held on December 22, 2010 at Ripley United Church of Christ, Traer from 10 to 11 a.m. A memorial service was held at Ripley United Church of Christ on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010 at 11 a.m. Interment was in Buckingham Cemetery, Traer.

Martha M. Axler Kubik was born on November 7, 1919, the daughter of Vince and Julia (Salasek) Axler, near Traer. She passed away on December 18, 2010 at the Mercy Hospice House in Cedar Rapids having attained the age of over 91 years. Martha lived on a farm along with four sisters and one brother. Everyone had their own chores to do. Martha learned many lessons on the farm from canning to making a meal for workers. She completed her education in the Traer area.

In 1941 Martha and Richard Kubik were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed 160 acres northwest of Traer. The couple had three boys, Roger, Darrell and Kevin. After the boys left home, Martha worked at Bun N Cue as a cook and Casey's Flower Shop. She and Rich loved to square dance in both Waterloo and Cedar Rapids. In 1969 Richard took a job at Nissen Corp in Cedar Rapids and they moved from the farm. Martha later made all the salads at a "Famous Recipe" chicken shop. On April 26, 1970, their son, Darrell was in a car accident. He died on May 8, 1970. Martha directed her energies to sewing, crafts, quilting, baking and cooking. She was involved with the Tabitha Society and was an active member at the Presbyterian Church where she was in the Quilting Circle. She also enjoyed traveling and cruising with her family. Martha had many Cedar Rapids friends but maintained her ties to Traer through a couple's card club and family.

Martha was preceded in death by parents; her husband, Richard; a son, Darrell; two grandchildren, Tracy and Scott Kubik; a brother, Elmer Axler; and 2 sisters, Hattie Hanousek and Lillian Kucera. She leaves to mourn her passing two sons, Roger (Betty) Kubik of Avoca and Kevin (Renee) Kubik of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Kerri (Mark) Rayer of Omaha, Neb., Angela (Paul) Smith of Harlan, Kory (Annie) Kubik of Urbandale, and Sean Kubik of Iowa City; three great-grandchildren, Christopher Connell and Chase and Parker Dimmitt; two sisters, Ida Kosnar and Julia Kubik of Traer; and numerous friends. Martha will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
