Union Knights great football season comes to an end

November 3, 2010
Dysart Reporter

Ninegames with perfect weather, nine games with nearly zero injuries, nine games with wins. It all came to an abrupt end in the first round of the playoffs vs a determined Clear Creek-Amana team at La Porte City on Wednesday night. The weather changed with 40 mph gusting winds, and the win column changed with a heartfelt 22-15 loss. Despite the less than perfect weather, the Union Knight faithful showed up in great numbers supporting the 2010 football squad.

The Knights led 9-7 at halftime after Josh Rohret scored for CCA in the first period on a 28 yard pass from Dillon Villhauer and Caleb Sedlacek kicked the PAT to take an early lead 7-0. The Knights responded with a Reid Monroe 32 yard fieldgoal and a 26 yard pass from Trev Hadachek to Brad Siebel but the PAT was wide. The Knights also had an opportunity inside the red zone and were denied by a penetrating CCA defense.

In the second half the Knights kicked off and recovered a fumble by CCA's kickoff return team. A Wes Burnside run in the 3rd quarter put Union up 15-7 after a fake PAT fell incomplete. That would be the last score for the Knights.

CCA scored twice in the fourth quarter with another pass from Villhauer to Rorhet from 22 yards out. It was followed by a two point conversion with Villhauer running the ball on a scramble. Later on the CCA defense stopped Union's run game and Villhauer converted on a 10 yd run and after a Sedlacek PAT led 22-15. That would be the final score as Union did not get the offense untracked and ended with an interception to finish the game out.

Burnside ran for 182 yards in 39 carries with 1 TD. Hadachek ran for 47 yards in 14 attempts (4 of 15, 1TD, 2 INT) but was sacked several times resultingin anet of 9 yards. Siebel had two receptions for 31 yards and 1TD, Feldpouch had one reception for 34 yards, and Bradley Gallup had one for nine yards.

On defense, Dylan McLaughlin (9T, 6U, 3A, 2TFL), Matt Schmitz (6T, 2A, 4A, 2.5TFL), Cory Feldpouch (5T, 5U), and TJ Gray(5T, 2U, 3A, .5TFL) led in the tackle department with Kyle Ansley also having two tackles for loss. Schmitz and Seibel had fumble recoveries, while Hunter Zempel had one interception.

Villhauer led the CCA offensive attack with 152 yards in 24 carries and one TD. Rohret had 8 receptions for 94 yards and 2 TDs. CCA will now play Williamsburg on Monday night in round two of the 2010 3A playoffs.

The Knights finish with a first ever (9-0) undefeated 3A district championship (23 year history) and also had the greatest number of wins in one season. In addition, there were many team and individual records set.
