Several Union Middle School Band members participated in the NEIBA Solo Ensemble Contest on March 4. The contest was a great success. An "Excellent" rating was earned and red ribbons were awarded to 8th graders Bailey Heerkes and Rachel Vaughn for their flute duet, 7th graders Dakota Hopper and Brandon Hill on their brass duet, Torie Ryan on her flute solo, and 6th graders Kassie Hennings on her trombone solo and Jayson Aschenbrenner on his alto saxophone solo. Blue ribbons and "Superior" ratings were awarded to 8th graders Kylie Wrobel on her euphonium solo accompanied by Amy Wrobel on piano, Alex Bear, Jacob Clark, Emily Sauer, and Riley McDowell on their saxophone quartet, Joel Wauters on his trumpet solo, Madeline LaPage on her alto saxophone solo, 7th graders Abby Ollendieck and Kaitlin Moore on their saxophone duet, Dobson Douglass on his trumpet solo, Maria Wrage on her French horn solo, Nathan Ferguson on his trumpet solo, Noah Dobson on his multiple percussion solo, Trey Hookham, Grant Mullen, and Morgan Phillips on their low brass trio, 6th graders soloists Jadin Hennings on flute, Katie Freeland on clarinet, Nicole Lowe on trombone, Trevor Krug on alto saxophone, Weston Krug on trumpet, and Wyatt Samuelson on trumpet. Three performances were chosen for the "Highly Superior" Rating and awarded gold ribbons. Recipients of the Highly Superior rating were 8th grade percussionist Kristen Lowe on her mallet solo "Sea Sounds" by Feldstein and snare drum solo "The Big Beat" by Schinstine, 8th grade French horn students Brooklyn Rogers and Leah Jungling for their horn duet "Allegro Moderato" by Monteclair, and 7th grade trumpet player Gabe Klein for his trumpet solo "Carnival of Venice" by Weber. Bill Livingston judged the contest and Mary Aschenbrenner accompanied the students on piano. Congratulations to all of these students on their successful performances.
