Leola M. Smoldt, 81 of Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook formerly of Garwin died Saturday, March 20, 2010 of an extended illness. Services will be held at United Methodist Church in Garwin on Thursday, March 25 at 10:30 am. Burial will be at Garwin Cemetery in Garwin.
Leola Marie Smoldt was born April 24, 1928 at Independence, the daughter of Robert and Alberta Cook Nelson. She received her education in the Independence schools where she later graduated. She then went to beauty school in Waterloo and following her graduation she became a hairdresser in Garwin. There she met Alvin Smoldt and they later married on July 14, 1948. Alvin and Leola made their home in the Garwin area where she worked for the Garwin Locker. She then took a job with Producers Savings Bank in Green Mountain where she was employed until her retirement. She was an active member of the Garwin United Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir for many years. Leola also blessed many with her singing talent by singing for many funerals for area families. She also was one of the first members of the Garwin Volunteer Ambulance crew. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alvin, two sisters, Alberta and Viola, four brothers, Don, Roy, Merlin and Glenn. She is survived by one son Brad (Cathy) Smoldt of Buffalo, Minn., one brother Carl (Marie) Nelson of Fla., two sister-in-laws, Marcy Nelson of Des Moines and Esther McBride of Shakopee, Minn., two grandchildren Randy (Kelly) Belair and Amanda Vail, three great grandchildren, Raina & Alexa Belair and Hailey Vail.
