It has been another successful AAU Volleyball season for the Wolf Creek Cougars. 63 area girls participated in the youth volleyball program for girls in grades 4-8. The Club was again coordinated for the 8th season by former Union High Head Volleyball Coach Joe Schmitz. This year, two of the club's teams have qualified for the State Gold AAU Tournament. The 5th Grade Black team, coached by Laurie Driscol, qualified on four separate occasions. The team enjoyed first place finishes at the 10-team La Porte City tournament on February 27 and again at a 7-team tournament at New Hartford on March 6. The 5th grade black team will play in the State Gold Tournament in Dike on March 27. Also qualifying for State is the 8th grade team coached by Joe Schmitz. That team placed first in a 6-team tournament held Feb. 6 in Nashua, and also placed second at a 12-team tournament held in Dike on Feb. 20. The 8th grade team will travel to Indianola to compete on March 27 at the State Gold Tournament.
A pizza party will be held for the players on March 28 at 5 PM in the UHS lower gym. Players are asked to bring their own drink. As Coach Schmitz has accepted the Head Volleyball coaching position at Independence High School, he states, "It has been a wonderful eight years of coaching volleyball at Union High School. I will always have great memories of the years I spent coaching volleyball here."
