Beth Alice Hotzel, 100, of Urbandale and formerly of Traer, died on January 10, 2010 at Karen Acres Care Center in Des Moines. Services will be held at a later date in Spring. Burial will be at Buckingham Cemetery in rural Traer. She was born on October 8, 1909, the daughter of Jay B. and Mable (Townley) Stoakes, on a farm near Traer. Beth graduated from Traer High School in 1926. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. She taught at Traer and Geneseo grade school. She was a member of Ripley Congregational Church in Traer and enjoyed cooking, reading, and traveling. In 1934 Beth was united in marriage to Donald Stevenson. They were the parents of one daughter, Marilyn. Donald died in 1955. In 1959, Beth was united in marriage to Roy Hotzel. He died in 1976. In 1985, she moved to Des Moines to live with her daughter. Beth was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; and two brothers, Lucas and Merle Stoakes. She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Harl of Des Moines and a grandson, David Harl of Minneapolis, Minn.
