On Nov. 13 Scrubby Bear visited Dysart-Geneseo Elementary preschool through 2nd grade classes. Scrubby Bear, a large bear mascot, sponsored by the American Red Cross, teaches the importance of good hand washing and how prevent the spread of germs. The program, designed for children 4 to 7 years, uses games and slogans to keep children involved while teaching basic hygiene practices such as Don't share personal items such as toothbrushes or silverware, cover coughs and sneezes with your arm or sleeve, keep objects and fingers away from one's mouth, nose and eyes, stay home when sick, what a germ is, where it comes from and how it spreads. when someone should wash their hands. Scrubby Bear also teaches these six steps to hand washing: 1.Wet hands with warm water 2.Use 1 squirt of liquid soap 3. Scrub front, back and between fingers the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday 4.Rinse well 5. Dry hands with a paper towel and turn the faucet off with the towel. 6. Throw paper towel in the trash. At the end of the 15 minute presentation, each student received an activity sheet, a Scrubby Bear sticker and a Scrubby Bear Clean Hands Club Membership Card. |
