The #11 rated class 3A Union Knights traveled to Oelwein on Oct. 26 for a first round class 3A regional volleyball match against the Oelwein Huskies. Oelwein entered the regional match with a 16-25record, while Union entered with a 25-8 record. In game 1, Union would open up a close 10-10 game, behind the powerful jump serves of senior Lauren Bauer. Bauer would record 5 straight ace serves to allow Union to open up a 15-10 lead. Fellow senior Ashley Hager would run off the last 4 points of game 1, giving Union a 25-15 game 1 victory. In game 2, the Huskies would begin to give Union trouble with their own aggressive serves. After another 6 point run by the serving of Bauer would give Union a 14-10 lead, Oelwein would fight right back with a 5 point run of there own, to capture a 16-15 lead. Casey Barney would tally 3 ace serves, to give Union back the lead at 19-16. The Huskies would refuse to roll over, and fight back to tie the game at 23-23. A hitting error by Union, would give the Huskies a hard fought 27-25 game 2 win. Game 3 would see Union regain the match edge behind the hitting of Ashley Hager, and serving of Bauer, Megan Clark, and Tori Zempel. Union would open up a tight 11-10 lead on 2 ace serves by Clark on a 3 point Union run. Bauer would further stretch the lead to 18-11 Union. Oelwein would close to within 18-14, before Union would get a big kill from Casey Barney to stop the run. Ashley Hager would then pound out 4 big kills to help lead Union to the important game 3 win at 25-17. Game 4 would see Union continue to pressure Oelwein with Bauer going on another 5 point run to give Union an early 6-2 lead. Sara Jesse, who would dish out 42 assists for the match, would contribute 6 points off serves to help stretch Union's lead to 23-18. The Huskies would have a service error at 24-20 in favor of Union, to finally end the match. "I was happy with our overall play tonight. Our serving was excellent, in particular, Lauren Bauer was sensational tonight. She has struggled lately with her consistency, but she was really on tonight. I was really happy with the play of all of our seniors. Ashley Hager had a very strong match for us. She had 19 kills, and had a .452 hitting efficiency for the night, Megan Clark was also very steady, contributing 5 kills, and 2 blocks. She also had to work very hard on serve receive, as she had 29 pass attempts for the match. I have to give Oelwein alot of credit, they played hard all night long. They served very aggressively at us, and dida nice job of hitting efficiently and played tough defense. We are very happy to get out of here with a win, and now must get our focus on playing #3 Class 3A, Waverly-Shell Rock in Waverly on Thursday night at 7pm. "Waverly is tall, athletic, and well coached, it will be a tremendous challenge for us."
