Union goes 4-2 at Waverly-Shell Rock Volleyball

The Union Knights went 4-2 for the day at the 2009 Waverly-Shell Rock Volleyball tournament on Saturday Oct. 3. The Knights, who recently entered the Class 3A polls at #12 rating, took on Crestwood to begin the day. The Knights would ride strong serving to sweep the Cadets 2-0. Next up, Union would take on the top rated team in class 2A in Mt. Vernon. The Knights battled the tall Mustangs point for point in game 1, but fell 21-18. Game 2 would also see Mt. Vernon hold off the Knights 21-15. Lauren Bauer would lead Union with 11/12 serving and 4 ace serves in the match. Casey Barney would tally 7 kills. The challenges did not get any easier for Union, as the Knights would next take on #2 rated (class 3A) Waverly-Shell Rock in the opening match of the 2nd round. Union would again play well, but drop two hard fought games to the Go-Hawks. Bauer would again have her jump serve working, as the senior would go 9/11 with 4 ace serves in the match, and

contribute 4 kills on offense. Sara Jesse would dish out 12 assists. Next up, Union would defeat Mason City 2-0, as Ashley Hager would record 9 kills for the Knights. In consolation play, Union would defeat North Butler in first round play, and CR Jefferson in the consolation finals. "I was really happy with the way the girls competed against Mt. Vernon and Waverly-Shell Rock. The girls played very aggressive, and with alot of heart today. We struggled keeping our level of play up at times during other matches, but came through with a solid performance to end the day against Cedar Rapids Jefferson." The Knights improved there overall record to 23-7 for the season. The Knights next travel to Jesup on Tuesday to take on the J-Hawks in NICL(east) conference play.
